Week 1 Recap

Good morning Crossroads Basketball League,

Jacob Brummett here. This season, I will be continuing to put out the weekly
recap emails. For those who are new or returning after a break, I have taken
over doing the recap emails during the season.

What you can expect is for the weekly emails to be split into four sections.
Those sections will include a weekly thought, basically just some thoughts or
reflections I have about anything and everything that I share in the hopes it
might be of some benefit to others. Sections two through four will include the
schedule for the following week, the weekly stat leaders, and a recap of each
game.

Weekly Thought:

I was having a conversation with a friend about identity earlier this week, and
how we were defining identity in that conversation was whatever or whoever you
put your confidence, trust, hope, and meaning into.

It seems to me that, especially in the world of athletics, we can easily base
our identity on our performance (I know that I am often guilty of this). Back in
the days when I was much more heavily involved in sports, I would have probably
described a majority of my identity as being an “athlete”.

The problem with identifying with what you do is that we often are taken on a
roller coaster of emotions based on how we perform at that thing at a
given time. I know that for me, when I performed well in sports, I would feel
really good about myself, and then, conversely, when I had a bad game or
practice, I would experience a host of negative emotions associated with my
performance, often generating insecurity surrounding much of my identity.

Now I believe it’s all well and good to have passions and to strive to perform
well. The problem is not in seeking to perform at a high level; the problem lies
in how much of our security, confidence, and trust comes from our ability, or
lack thereof, to perform at a given time. At some point in our lives, we will
not be able to do the thing to the same standard we used to, if at all, and when
this happens, who are we and where do we base our confidence and trust? If we
desire a secure identity, then it simply cannot be based upon our performance
because our limits will catch up to us at some point.

When this happens, where will we go or who will we turn to as a source of
confidence, hope, trust, and meaning?

Week 2 Schedule:

* 5:30 PM — Tyler’s Heroes vs. Goon Squad (Noah’s Ark: Noah, Kai, Sawyer)

* 6:30 PM —  Balling for God  vs.  Noah’s Ark   (Matt and the Missed
Opportunities: Greg, Joey, Jeff)

* 7:30 PM —  Justin Time   vs.  Matt and the Missed Opportunities (Balling for
God: Tyler, Johnathan, Thomas)

Weekly Stat Leaders:
* The league’s leading scorers for our season opener were both Ryno
Moore and Joey Zoller with 23 points apiece. Joey’s teammate, Timothy
Johnson, followed closely behind with 21 points.
* Joey and Tim also made an appearance in the rebounding leaders category as
they each boasted a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 rebounds,
respectively.
* Joey decided he wasn’t done filling the stat sheet, as he also led the league
in blocked shots this week with three to go along with his double-double.

Weekly Recap:
* Tyler’s Heroes blew out Justin Time by a score of 70 to 53 to open up Season
12. Team Captain Tyler’s usual strategy of drafting a balanced team seems to
have paid off so far, with everyone on the team contributing to the
scoreboard and the team shooting overall efficiently to enter the season with
a winning record. Justin Time’s team captain Justin was unable to make the
season opener begging the question if the team name should be changed to “Not
Justin’s Time”.
* Cloudy with a Chance of Airballs won a nail-biter against Matt and the Missed
Opportunities, thanks to Matt’s team living up to their name with some
crucial missed opportunities late in the game to seal a victory. The combined
double-doubles of Tim and Joey were not enough to hold off the 10 made threes
by  Cloudy with a Chance of Airballs, who, inversely, avoided living up to
their name (at least so far).
* In our final game for the week, Balling for God turned it on late in the game
to get a win over Goon Squad by a score of 62-49. The Goon Squad struggled
from 3, shooting a measly 5-21 from behind the arc, although Balling for
God’s percentage was not any better at 8-26. Team Captain Ryno Moore’s 100%
two point percentage and 50% three point percentage may have been the X
factor that helped obtain victory. Or it could be that they were balling for
God and maybe that orchestrated some divine intervention to help them win. We
may never know.

Have a great week everyone, we will see you on Sunday!
