Week 2 Recap

Good morning everyone,

So much for sending this out Tuesday morning like I had planned… However, in
my defense I was puking my guts out on Sunday and it has taken a while to
recover (stay tuned for my excuse next week on why the email is out late). But
in all seriousness this stomach bug going around is a nasty one. Praying
everyone who hasn’t gotten it yet stays healthy!

Weekly Thought:

So to be completely honest with you guys, this week has been a rough one.
Recovering from the flu, lots of challenges at work, and then some other issues
on top of that have made this week less than enjoyable. This morning however, I
am feeling much more encouraged than I have been all week. I was reading in the
book of Psalms in my Bible this morning along with spending some time in prayer
and was very uplifted by what I read. One of the verses that I found the most
encouragement from says “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in
trouble”. The chapter goes on to say “Therefore we will not fear though the
earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though
its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling”. Much of
what I have been dealing with this week are factors completely outside of my
control. Reflecting on this truth reminds me that I do not have to rely on my
strength to figure out the uncontrollables in my life but I can take refuge in
God who promises to take care of my problems through his strength and not mine.

Like I mentioned last week, I often fail to turn to God with what I am
challenged with which is the exact opposite of what I should be doing. The book
of Psalms often has the recurring theme of God’s protection and refuge for those
who trust and look to him. I have heard it said that everyone is either
currently going through a trial, just getting out of one, or about to experience
one. How encouraging, right? Thankfully for us, we can rely on God to be our
help in times of trouble because he will not fail us. Here are just a few of the
many verses in Psalm that emphasize this point:
* Psalm 2:12: “Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”
* Psalm 9:9: “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of
trouble.”
* Psalm 16:1: “Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.”
* Psalm 18:2: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my
rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my
stronghold.”

I believe that God also uses the people around us to help us through
the challenges of life. I know that is something we want this league to be, not
just a place to play basketball once a week but also a community where people
can talk about the hard things too. We’re all going through something at one
time or another and none of us can do it on our own. We hope that for those who
are going through a tough time you can feel comfortable to reach out to a
captain, teammate, or other league member if you need it.

Week 3 Schedule:

* 5:30 PM — Energizer Bunnies vs. 99 Problems (He is Rizzen: Anthony, Garrett,
Michael)

* 6:30 PM — He is Rizzen vs. Airballers Anonymous (Ol’ Dogs and New Tricks:
Jason, Doug, James)

* 7:30 PM — Ol’ Dogs and New Tricks vs. Underdogish (Airballers Anonymous:
Timothy, Jakob, Marc)

Weekly Stat Leaders:

* We had lots of double-doubles this week with Trevor Couch putting up 18
points and 13 rebounds, Justin Philobos scoring 15 points along with snagging
13 rebounds, Ryno Moore with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Nathan Brummett
coming up with 24 points along with 12 boards.
* Shocking to no one Nathan Brummett and Brandon Cunningham tied for the
scoring title this week with 24 points each. However, both Tyler Sewell and
Aaron Slack finished a close second with 22 points each.
* Other notable mentions were Doug Husen’s unselfish play where he hauled in 8
rebounds and handed out 2 assists without taking a shot from the field (let’s
all be more like Doug), the Holloway brothers combining for 10 steals between
the two of them, and then a pair of solid all around performances from Kevin
Du (7 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals) and Johnathan Cabral (9
points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals)..

Weekly Recap (written by Kevin)

* The Ol’ Dogs definitely looked a little “Long in the tooth” playing against
the Energizer Bunnies, who ended up winning by 19. Aaron and Jackson were
able to break the zone several times, but the Bunnies outpaced and outscored
the dogs behind at least 20 fast break points. Tyler’s team may lack size,
but they have out run and out gun teams in their first 2 games. Final score
51-43.

* UnderdogISH was definitely more underdog than “ish” since they were missing
their captain and co-captain this week. After a spry week 1, Kai
re-aggravated his knee for the 3rd season in a row. Prayers up for his
recovery! Brandon took his foot off the scoring gas pedal this game and
became a facilitator after cashing in 2 in-game dunks. The Cabral Brothers
should probably have been on team Energizer Bunny, as they hustled for every
50/50 ball all game. Shout out to Jessica Bold for setting her career high in
our league with 10 points and Trevor for not fouling out. Final score 65-40.
* He Is Rizzen played their first game of the season, but they fell short of
lofty expectations, losing to 99 Problems. Justin has picked another well
balanced team of high energy players, spearheaded by Nathan Brummet. Ryno
started off his first year as a captain drafting a team consisting mainly of
CHS players, but the chemistry was lacking and they shot 20% from behind the
arc as a team, taking 10 more shot attempts outside the 3pt line than inside.
Ethan Silguero had a nice bounce back game, going 75% from deep after going
9% from deep in game 1. Final score 66-53.
