Weekly Thought:
For a lot of people, the world is pretty scary right now. Groceries are expensive. Politics are divisive. Natural disasters seem frequent. Wars are waging. Everything seems uncertain, and this can generate a lot of anxiety. These are definitely thoughts I have to wrestle with weekly. Some verses that I have found especially helpful in this time come from Matthew 6. In these verses, Jesus teaches us how to approach money and our needs, such as food and clothing. If you have a minute, you should go read the full passage on worry and finances which can be found in Matthew 6:19-34.
The verses that I find the most encouraging are verses 32b-33, where Jesus says: “For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”. I take comfort in the fact that God knows I need things like food, clothing, and shelter and he promises to provide those for me.
So why do we worry about these things? Well, speaking for myself, I worry because I like control. I like knowing exactly how things are going to play out. This information helps reduce my anxiety. It also makes it easier because then I don’t have to trust God. When I know exactly where my money is coming from, I don’t need to trust God to provide. When everything around me is going the way I want it to go, I don’t need to trust that God is ultimately in control. I then begin to believe that I have control. I can easily forget about my need for God and focus on enjoying my life. It’s when things feel out of control that I remember that I actually depend on God for everything I have, especially the things I take for granted, such as the breath in my lungs.
Multiple times Jesus commands us, “do not worry”. Even when everything in the world or in my life feels out of my control, I am told, “Do not worry”. Okay, sure, but easier said than done. How am I supposed to not worry when maybe I don’t know how we’re going to afford food or what the state of our country is going to be come November? Well, I see from this passage that my instructions are simple, “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,” and God will take care of the rest. We can’t just focus on something. Trying to just not worry or to just stop thinking about something won’t work. At least it doesn’t work for me. Instead, what I see here is that we are to shift our focus to God and the mission he has for us.
Instead of hyper-focusing on the things outside my control, I am to leave those in God’s hands because He has all things under his control. So, when those anxieties start to creep in, I have to discipline myself to take those thoughts captive and remind myself of God’s promise to always provide for me. It’s a constant discipline of succeeding control to God and fighting those urges to try to take the control back. Then, from there, I am learning that I am to focus on loving and serving my family and my community, which ends up leading to a more joyful and content life for me.
Hopefully, Jesus’ words encourage you just as much as they have encouraged me lately. Also, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you would like prayer.
Week 3 Stat Leaders:
- Brandon Cunningham came back from his week out to put up another impressive stat line of 26 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals to lead all scorers and to tie for the lead in rebounds. His team is currently the only team that remains undefeated despite him being out last week and Ryno Moore being out this week.
- This week, we had four players put up double-doubles. Michael Van Egmond with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Trevor Couch with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Brandon Porras with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Cunningham with 26 points and 14 rebounds.
- Collin Day also deserves a shout-out this week for 12 points on 85.7% shooting. That efficiency helped propel his team to a victory over the Holmies.
- Other notable performances this week were Jessica Bold’s 11 points and 6 rebounds, Brandon Porras’s 6 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks, along with his double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Week 3 Recap:
Bricklayers U secured the victory against the Holmies to move up to second place. Ryan Holmes’ 24 points and Michael Van Egmond’s double-double proved not enough to overcome Bricklayers U captain Tyler Bernth’s 21 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. Final score 61-46.
Alekz and the HomesCOOLers caught fire in the last few minutes of the game to lengthen their lead and hand Prodigal Suns and Luna their third straight loss. They were led again by Matias Seccombe’s high scoring and high percentage shooting, along with strong performances from Tyler Sewell and Brent Pellens. Final score 62-48.
Finally, Couch Potatoes were able to get a double-digit win over Boats and Bros to remain undefeated despite their highest scores Ryno Moore and Brandon Cunningham only having played one game together this season. Final score 59-48.
