Week 4 Recap

Happy Wednesday!
I just came back from lunch with Kai where we discussed friends, basketball, and the wealth gap.
Our final “regular season” game is this week! Three teams are battling for 2nd place after the Knights clinched 1st with their win last week. Should be some good games! We will be having Captain Tyler Bernth hosting a livestream this week with his wife Megan! Hopefully I can sort out the audio issues so it’s an easier listen… If anyone has livestream setup experience and can shoot over some pointers, let me know!
Beach Day!
A reminder that Macie and Josh will be hosting a beach day June 1st at Corona Del Mar! They will be arriving at 10am at lifeguard station 3. If you would like her contact, let me know and I will have her text you.

Week 4 Recap:
  • We had 2 people pour in 22 points to lead all scorers, but I will be giving the award to Ryno Moore because he had a 50/50/50 shooting line (50% from the field, 50% from 3pt, and 50% from the FT)
  • Don’t feel bad, because the other top scorer still gets an award: Tyler Bernth’s caught fire from deep, draining 4/6 from behind the arc, and he was 1 block short of getting a 5×4
  • Better known for his scoring, Nathan Brummett struggled with a bit with his shot but found a way to make up for it by pulling down 12 rebounds
  • Justin Philobos hasn’t scored a lot of points this season, but he’s doing all the little things to help his team win. This week, it was by contributing 4 assists.
  • In our most competitive game of the season, Sawyer McKenzie almost willed his team to victory with 4 blocks
  • It’s been a while since Tyler Sewell has made an appearance, but he’s made it back on the leaderboard by racking up 5 steals.
  • The J’s have figured something out since week 3. They went from having the lowest total points scored to having the most in the past 2 weeks. Steven Kim finally got it going from midrange, shooting 64% from the field. They are in contention for 2nd place seeding but they will need to continue to step on the gas and catch up in point differential. The StK were decimated by injury and load management and were only able to keep the game to a respectable 20 point loss because of the players they brought in on a 2-way contract. Brandon Porras continues to disappoint and Captain Kai Husen is inching closer to getting back on the court. Co-Captain Aaron Slack finally got it going from deep, though, so there’s some hope they might be able to get a win this coming week.
  • SJ96 were coming off a tough loss and hoped to notch a win against HHH but fatigue and dislocated fingers ultimately didn’t help them to secure the win. Timothy Johnson filled the box score, but his 18 points weren’t enough. Shoutout to Lacey Naylor for setting a mean screen and staying up on two feet after getting run into full speed by the defender (call out screens, people!). I mentioned it on stream and on the court, but I’ve never seen Justin Philobos jump as high as he did to get a block that didn’t count because there was a foul on the play. Every player on Justin’s team who played put points on the board, which is probably a big reason for their win. They look to cement 2nd place with a win over the undefeated Knights this coming week.
  • I had a feeling that this game would get chippy, and it did not disappoint. In a close, physical game, the Knights came away with the victory despite some late game heroics by Sawyer McKenzie. There wasn’t a lot of contribution toward the score on their team by anyone not named Ryno or Nathan but it ultimately came down to free throws, where they went 14/20 as a team compared to Run who went 3/5 from the stripe. I anticipate the head coach of Run submitting tape to the league about this free throw discrepancy. Everyone on Sawyer’s team also scored, but unlike HHH, it was not enough to come away with a victory.
  • Run it Back is the first team to hit 100 3pt attempts this season, and they also have the highest 3pt%, barely beating out J’s for Days by 0.1%! Knights of the Round Ball are sitting at the bottom of 3pt% despite taking the second most attempts at 81. Stairway to Kevin is on track to have the worst point differential in the history of the league, but on a positive note, they have the highest FT%.
